near infrared (NIR)

Infrared light is not visible to the human eye. The wavelength range for the entire infrared spectrum is about 40 times larger than that for visible light. Therefore, this wavelength range is subdivided into different infrared ranges, especially since the different infrared wavelengths are used in different applications.

The infrared light that joins the visible light is called Near Infrared ( NIR), and those that join it are called Short Wavelength Infrared( SWIR), Mid Wavelength Infrared (MWIR), Long Wavelength Infrared (LWIR), and Far Infrared ( FIR). The wavelengths of Near Infrared (NIR) range from 0.78 µm to 1.4 µm and are used for optical transmission in optical fibers. Those of SWIR are in the wavelength range between 1.0 µm and 3.5 µm and those of Far Infrared are between 15 µm and 1 mm...

Overview of infrared ranges

Near infrared technology is used in night vision devices or in infrared surveillance equipment. Here, objects are illuminated with near-infrared illumination and monitored with infrared cameras. The technique can also be used for high-speed video recording in automatic license plate recognition( ANPR) of moving motor vehicles.
