name binding protocol (Apple) (NBP)

The NameBinding Protocol (NBP) is an AppleTalk protocol for translating device names to AppleTalk addresses in local area networks.

In AppleTalk, there are no central instances that allocate the addresses, rather they must allocate themselves using AppleTalk Address Resolution Protocol( AARP). The Name Binding Protocol (NBP) assigns dynamic addresses to the fixed AppleTalk names of the devices and the services offered. It is located between the transport layer and the application layer.
