multistation access unit (MSAU)

The Multistation Access Unit (MSAU) is the ring line distributor in Token Ring, with which the terminal devices are connected to the ring. The MSAU forms a cable concentrator for lobe cables, via which the individual end devices are connected in point-to-point connections, forming a star-shaped structure. There are passive and active MSAUs; the latter detect whether devices are connected.
