multilink PPP (ML-PPP)

The multilink PPP protocol( ML-PPP or MLPPP) is an extension of the point-to-point protocol (PPP) that can be used to split the PPP data stream into several independent transmission channels or to bundle several channels into one channel.

This protocol, which supports circuit-switched connections, can be used to perform load-sensitive channel splitting. With the ML-PPP protocol, several network connections, even different ones, are combined into a single virtual connection with a higher transmission rate on the link layer. This means that fixed connections can be combined with ISDN connections or other connections. This allows the entire connection capacity to be used for broadband applications.

The LM-PPP protocol was specified by the Internet Engineering Task Force( IETF) in 1994 and is published under RFC 1717, for operation over ISDN. Other communication media such as dial-up via telephone modems, cable modems, optical networks and satellite links were added later.
