multi hop

A multi-hop concept uses multiple hops to transmit the message from one terminal or node to another terminal. The number of hops can be affected by routing algorithms, distance limitations, or field strength degradation.

In wireless networks, there are special strategies for the use of multi-hop. This is related to free space attenuation, which increases by 20 dB with the decade of distance. In order that the transmission power does not have to be increased exponentially with the distance during the radio transmission between the transmitter and the receiving device, one works with multi-hop. The number of hops is increased and the transmitting power can be reduced to bridge greater distances.

This method is used, for example, in 5th generation mobile communications networks in 5G Release 16.
