momentary average interruption frequency index (MAIFI)

Momentary Average Interruption Frequency Index (MAIFI) is an indicator of supply reliability for electric utilities. It is the averaged value for temporary interruptions in the power supply that an electricity customer can expect over a fixed period of time - usually 1 year.

Electric utilities interpret the MAIFI value differently, in that they only consider interruptions of a certain duration. For example, some calculate interruption durations of one minute, others five minutes.

The MAIFI value is the quotient of the cumulative interruption time to the total supply time. The MAIFI value is not as widely used as the index for supply reliability in power networks, the Customer Average Interruption Frequency Index( CAIFI), or the index for average interruption frequency, the System Average Interruption Frequency Index( SAIFI).
