modulation index

The modulation index is a characteristic value of the frequency modulation. It is designated by the Greek letter small eta and stands for the ratio of frequency dev iation and modulation frequency. Since the frequency deviation ( FM deviation) depends on the amplitude of the modulation frequency, there is a direct relationship between modulation index and signal amplitude.
