The increasing complexity of software and systems

means that system engineers no longer rely exclusively on text documents, but are increasingly working with model-based systems engineering (MBSE). In model-based systems engineering, system models are developed with which the developers define and document the systems. The developed models, through their graphical representation, can translate the increasing complexity of system development in a more understandable way, thus contributing to better assessment and evaluation. In essence, the goal is to represent the complexity of systems graphically. This is done in such a way that the time sequences, the data flow, the logical relationships, the required priorities and variants, the communication

between the development teams and the customers, and the operational functions are represented in a way that can be understood across functions. Appropriate models have a vertical integration that includes component models, system models, and operational models. Models have advantages over traditional text documents in that visually represented relationships are better captured and that models can be represented from different angles and levels. In addition, there is no room for interpretation with models as with natural language because the graphical representation can be structured and, as a further aspect, the model representation supports plausibility.
