mobility management (mobile communications) (MM)
Mobility Management (MM) is the management of whereabouts information and connection control of mobile subscribers. These are implemented procedures ofGSM, UMTS and Long Term Evolution( LTE).
Since mobile subscribers have to send and receive their calls and text messages regardless of location, mobility management is concerned with detecting the radio cell in which the mobile subscriber is currently located and with handover and roaming when moving to another radio cell or to the radio range of another provider. The radio cell or the location is determined via the location directory( HLR) - in LTE technology by the home subscriber server ( HSS) - and the visitor directory( VLR) or the temporary subscriber identifier ( TMSI).
Mobility managementtasks include identification of the subscriber, checking access authorization, location registration, and general system information.
