mobile application part (SS7) (MAP)

The Mobile Application Part (MAP) is an application part in the SS7 signaling in mobile radio systems.

The SS7 protocol has been equipped with additional functions for querying the databases from the Mobile Switching Center( MSC). These functions have been implemented in MAP, which consists of several application service elements that register subscribers in the Home Location Register( HLR) and Visitor Location Register( VLR) and determine their location through a query.

MAP is an operating part of the signaling system and is implemented in the corresponding system components such as the HLR and VLR databases and the mobile switching center, and is built on top of the Message Transmission Part( MTP) the Signaling Control Part( SCCP) and the Transmission Capabilities Applications Part ( TCAP).
