mobile IP (MIP)

Mobile-IP is the enhanced version of the IP protocol developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force( IETF) for mobile terminals that are connected to different IP networks at different points but retain their ancestral IP address. The interfaces of the mobile terminals to the wired local area networks are the access points( AP) in the different IP subnets.

The mobility of the end device means that there is no assignment of the IP address to the network in which the mobile end device, the mobile node( MN), is located, since the mobile end device can switch from one network to another. Therefore, mobile terminals have been located in a Home Network( HN) and given a permanent Home Address( HA). If a mobile node is in the Home Network, it communicates this to the Home Agent (HA). When it moves to a foreign network, it registers there with the foreign agent( FA). The FA informs the home agent of its care-of address( CoA), under which it can be reached in the foreign network. This CoA address is a temporary IP address. It usually corresponds to the address of the foreign agent that forwards the incoming IP packets to the mobile terminal. Before this, the IP packets are assigned the care-of address by the home agent, which receives them first, and transmitted to the foreign agent in tunneling.

To ensure the mobility of end devices, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) presented such a solution for IPv4 as early as 1996: Mobile IPv4 (MIPv4). These specifications deal exclusively with mobility at the network layer. Another mobility function is provided by the handover. Fast Handovers for Mobile IP( FMIP or FMIPv6) was specified by the IETF for this purpose. Where FMIPv6 works with the IPv6 protocol and is suitable for real-time applications such as Internet telephony. The mobility functions for the layers below are provided by WLANs according to 802.11f with the Inter Access Point Protocol( IAPP) and by Bluetooth, or by the UMTS or General Packet Radio Service( GPRS) mobile networks. Mobile IP is described in RFCs 3344 and 3775, among others.
