Use and extent of the various radio cells

Microcells are those used in mobile communications systems, including 5th generation( 5G) mobile networks, and also in DECT cordless telephony. They have a small footprint of about 100 meters to 2 kilometers. They belong to the small cell category and are mainly used in metropolitan areas and in large buildings and busy facilities such as train stations, exhibition halls, airports and stadiums. They are also used in hilly and mountainous geographical areas where a macrocell cannot broadcast the entire coverage area due to radio shadowing.

In 5G networks, microcells transmit millimeter waves in the frequency range between 24 GHz and 100 GHz. The propagation of these 5G frequencies is relatively low and is only a few hundred meters due to the high free- space attenuation.
