messaging API (Microsoft) (MAPI)

Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) is a programming interface through which different users can access e-mail services.

MAPI was originally developed by Microsoft and was available with the first versions of Windows. With MAPI, e-mails can be sent from application programs. For example, a word processor could exchange data with a spreadsheet via a provider 's mail server.

MAPI is available in Simple MAPI and Extended MAPI versions. As an alternative to MAPI, the Vendor Independent Messaging( VIM) interface has been proposed by various manufacturers, including Apple, IBM and Lotus, but it has not been able to assert itself against MAPI.
