maximum output level (magnetic tape) (MOL)

The Maximum Output Level (MOL) specifies the distortion that a magnetic tape may have at a given frequency.

By definition, the MOL value is the value that the 3rd harmonic of a recorded 1 kHz signal may have. After that, this value may be 3%. This means that the maximum output level is reached when the 3 kHz harmonic has a distortion of 3%.

The reason why the MOL value is determined at the third harmonic is that this harmonic can be heard better than the second harmonic. In addition, it can be easily detected in pure tones.
