The Manufacturing Message Specification(MMS) standardizes the exchange of messages in the production area.

The Manufacturing Message Specification (MMS) provides functions that can be used to observe, monitor and control device operations and technical processes. The MMS specifications grew out of work done by the Electronics Industry Association( EIA) and originally dealt only with communication between NC controllers and DNC systems. It was not until General Motors became involved that this project work achieved draft status (EIA RS 511, Draft 5). ISO has specified the Manufacturing Message Specification (MMS) under ISO standard 9506.
