magnetic coupler

Magnetic, transformer or inductive couplers use a magnetic field between two coils for data transmission.

A magnetic coupler can be a transformer, as in the case of the transformer-based coupler, but it can also be a coil whose magnetic field lines flow through a GMR sensor. Such a coupler, which has a coil on the primary side and a GMR bridge on the secondary side, is called a magnetic coupler. GMR sensors, Giant Magneto-Resistive, are a material whose resistance value changes when a magnetic field is applied. The change is amplified and evaluated by the bridge circuit.

A disadvantage of magnetic couplers is that they react very sensitively to all magnetic field lines, i.e. also to interfering magnetic fields. However, with GMR sensors the orientation of the magnetic field is important.
