loop

  1. In the access network, the loop is the connection between the end user and the exchange.

  2. The rerouting of the data path in ring networks, e.g. in the event of a cable defect. In an active ring, there are always two loops, normally positioned within the director. However, if the Director performs a ring reconfiguration to bypass a faulty area, then TAP (Terminal Access Point) loops are positioned in each of the two closest to the faulty area. Engineering loops are required to extend or modify a ring. These are temporarily positioned in selected TAPs by the System Manager via system parameters in order to "loop out" a specific TAP or a partial area of the ring.
