login

The login is a login procedure with which the user gains access to the operating system of the computer or to an application program or with which he opens a communication session.

When logging in for a communication session, the system user must authenticate himself to the network provider or network service by entering the user ID and password or a passphrase. After the login procedure, the participant has access to the network infrastructure and certain resources on the network. This can be a server or an online service. Often the first login data is assigned by the provider so that the user can log in. This login data can only be used and changed exclusively by the subscriber.

In the client-server architecture, the client logs in to the server. The login can be done manually or automatically, by functions of the communication software or the modem. This is referred to as autologin or logon. A login session ends with the logout.
