local management interface (ATM) (LMI)

Local Management Interface (LMI) is an ITU specification for the interface between the user of an ATM or frame relay network and the network management services.

This frame relay polling protocol checks the User Network Interface( UNI) and the Permanent Virtual Circuits( PVC). LMI includes support for a keep-alive mechanism that checks to see if a data flow is present and has a multicast mechanism that provides the network server with the local Data Link Channel Identifier( DLCI) and multicast DLCI. In addition, the Local Management Interface provides global addressing and a status mechanism.
