local exchange network

Local exchange networks are regionally limited supply networks for local communications connections. They consist of local exchanges, interconnecting lines with intermediate branches, and the subscriber line. Within the local networks, the cable networks are routed in a star configuration to the local exchange.

The structure of the local networks is hierarchical and knows different levels in which branches provide for the signal switching. These levels are interconnected by special cables. Thus, the local exchange is connected to the main distribution frame via the main cable to the cable branches. The cable splitters, in turn, are connected to the final splitter via branch cables. The terminal lines are connected to these splitters, which are terminated at the end customer with the TAE unit. The various cables have a different number of pairs and are designed for specific distances.

Local networks have their own local network code and, depending on their size, have one or more connection areas. A local network is defined by all the connections that can be reached via the local network code.
