linear tape file system (LTFS)

Linear Tape File System (LTFS) is a file system that defines how data is stored on magnetic tapes. It is a self-describing file format developed by IBM and introduced in 2010.

The LTFS file system was developed specifically to meet archiving requirements and has been adopted by Linear Tape Open( LTO) cartridge companies. The LTFS file system specifies the hierarchical directory structures for data storage, as well as the organization of data and metadata on magnetic tape. Under LTFS, two partitions can be created so that each partition contains the metadata of the other. The LTFS file system works independently of external databases and storage systems and allows direct access to the stored data.
