lightning arrester (LA)

As can be seen from the word lightning conductor (LA), it is a device with which lightning is diverted to the earth potential. Such systems are called lightning protection systems.

A lightning conductor is an electrically conductive wire, one end of which is placed on the ridge of the building roof or on the chimney, and the other end of which is connected to the earth electrode. Whereby it may be a surface earth electrode or a depth earth electrode. A surface earth electrode can be a ring earth electrode or a mesh earth electrode, which is buried about one meter below the surface of the earth. Deep earth electrodes, on the other hand, are driven up to 15 meters into the ground and guarantee a constant earth resistance.

The striking lightning is conducted to the ground point via the lightning conductor on the outside of the building. Since lightning causes extremely high currents, the lightning conductor should have the largest possible diameter and be made of copper. Conductive gutters and downspouts can also be included in the lightning arrestor.

To increase lightning protection, several interconnected lightning conductors can also be installed on the building roof.
