Escrow stands for trust. Key escrow is therefore the trustee function of a trusted third party, such as a trusted third party( TTP), with whom a key can be deposited. This can also be public institutions, such as law enforcement agencies, which can obtain the private key via the higher- level institution na and thus decrypt the encrypted messages.

The advantage of key escrow is that lost keys can be retrieved from the trusted entity.
