itanium

Intel's Itanium is a 64-bit processor family in VLIW architecture designed for high- performance, high-end servers, for the RISC and Unix markets.

With its 64-bit addressing, the Itanium can address much more memory and perform compute-intensive tasks such as encryption much more effectively and quickly. The first version of the Itanium has clock frequencies of 733 MHz and 800 MHz, the Titanium-2 already 1.3 GHz, 1.4 GHz and 1.5 GHz. As architecture, they are based on Intel's own EPIC architecture, are scalable and have integrated level 1, level 2 and level 3 caches.

The second generation Itanium represents higher bus bandwidths, more functional units and a fast Level 3 cache with 6 megabytes( MB) ofmemory capacity. As a chipset, Intel offers the Chipset 870, with which up to four central processing units( CPU) can be controlled and connected to other chipsets via a scaling port. Aggregated memory bandwidths of up to 12.8 GB/s can be achieved via corresponding configurations with up to eight DDR RAMs. With two memory banks, speeds of 8.6 GB/s are achieved.
