irrelevance

Irrelevant is the term used for signals or parts of signals that have no meaning for the receiver because he cannot recognize, see or hear them. Irrelevant information is irrelevant and inconsequential.

From the transmission point of view, irrelevant information is relevant for data reduction. Many data compression, image compression, and audio compression techniques take irrelevance of information into account by neither processing nor transmitting it. Examples of this are the ZIP file format, which disregards irrelevant data during compression, and also the various audio compressions, which do not process inaudible sounds.

Search engine results also list irrelevant search results in the results pages. These irrelevant results are called false drops.
