internetworking

Internetworking is the interconnection of several or many computer networks using the same or different network technology.

An Internetwork consists of a number of geographically distributed networks that are interconnected via intermediate networks and Internetworking components. The networks can be local area networks( LAN), metropolitan area networks( MAN), wide area networks (WAN), or the Internet. The interconnecting coupling elements for networking, i.e. for connecting local networks, are repeaters, bridges and hubs, and for internetworking they are switches, gateways and routers, which determine the routing of data streams between the different network architectures and control them across the networks. Routing is done with routing protocols that optimize routes according to predefined routing algorithms. Routing protocols reside at the network layer of the OSI reference model.

Internetworking ensures that communication links between communication partners are realized and maintained over several different networks.
