international mobile telecommunications for the year 2000 (IMT)

IMT-2000 is a standard adopted by the International Telecommunication Union( ITU) for 3rd generation( 3G) mobile communications in the frequency range around 2,000 MHz, or 2 GHz. The number 2000 refers to the year.

To meet the requirements of all nations, the ITU has grouped several individual standards under the ITM 2000 standard. This allows network operators to implement existing 2nd generation( 2G) infrastructures into 3rd generation networks. The IMT-2000 family consists of the UMTS and CDMA2000 mobile communications systems, which, however, use different transmission methods such as Code Division Multiple Access( CDMA) or Time Division Multiple Access( TDMA). In IMT-2000, the successor concept to Future Public Land and Mobile Telecommunication System( FPLMTS), high data transmission ratesare realized, for which IMT-2000 defines different service profiles for different applications and transmission rates. One realization of IMT-2000 is UMTS.

IMT-2000 provides Time Division Duplex( TDD) and Frequency Division Duplex( FDD) for asymmetric and symmetric data services. In Europe, Wideband Code Division Multiple Access(WCDMA) and TD-CDMA are used. IMT-2000 also offers an option for satellite transmission. The transmission ranges for IMT-2000 are between 1.985 GHz and 2.025 GHz and between 2.110 GHz and 2.200 GHz.

IMT-Advanced is an extension of IMT-2000 for 4th generation ( 4G) mobile communications systems decided by the International Telecommunication Union(ITU). This mobile communications standard is about the further development of mobile communications technology beyond the data rates of 100 Mbit/s specified for Long Term Evolution( LTE). It is about data rates of up to 10 Gbit/s, which are to be realized with the various releases with LTE-A. For 5th generation mobile communications systems( 5G), the International Telecommunication Union has adopted IMT-2020.
