intermediate bus converter (IBA) (IBC)

Intermediate Bus Converters (IBC) are isolating step-down converters that convert a higher supply voltage to multiple lower supply voltages.

The IBC converter is used in the Intermediate Bus Architecture( IBA), it converts and regulates the supply voltage from 48 V to several lower voltages for the boards. For example, into 12 V, 5.0 V, 3.3 V, 2.5 V, 1.8 V and 1.2 V. The efficiency of IBC converters reaches values of up to 98%, depending on the process.

IBC converters, which are available in quarter-brick and eighth-brick formats, are distinguished between those with a fixed division ratio, in which the output voltage is unregulated and always has a fixed division ratio to the input voltage. These IBC converters achieve efficiencies of 98%, but voltage changes have an immediate effect on the converted voltages.

In addition to the unregulated IBC converters, there are the regulated ones. They can regulate a wide supply voltage range from 36 V to 75 V, but have a lower efficiency than the IBC converters with fixed division ratio. Another design is the semi-regulated IBC. In this design, regulation can kick in when certain limits are exceeded. As long as the limit values are not exceeded, the semi-regulated with fixed division ratio operates.
