interleaving

Interleaving is an interleaving technique used in memory technology and transmission technology, radio technology and telecommunications.

  1. In memories and on hard disks, interleaving is used to interleave data blocks. According to the procedure, the data blocks are not written directly into the memory during interleaving, but are interleaved beforehand by changing their data word width. For example, ten 32-bit words are converted into forty 8-bit words, which are stored in different memory areas. In this process, interleaving forms an ordinal number that specifies the order in which data segments that belong together are stored in data memories. To optimize access to the individual sectors, there is an interleave factor that controls the read/write head in such a way that it reaches the sector to be written to or read from next as quickly as possible. This factor determines the most favorable ratio with which logical sectors are physically accommodated. Interleaving was used to increase the performance of slow hard disks, but is no longer used in the newer drives.
  2. To achieve higher code rates during transfer, interleaving is used for concatenating codes. By interspersing errors, this achieves a higher code rate.
  3. In addition to interleaving in hard disks, there is also time interleaving. The

interleaving Data blocks that were originally in succession are changed in their chronological order by interleaving. With this time interleaving, the data blocks appear in different time frames. For example, numbers that are listed in columns can be transmitted row by row, only to be read out again on the receiving side in columns.
  4. In transmission technology, interleaving is also used to avoid burst errors.

st errors Burst errors destroy entire data blocks that cannot be corrected by error correction mechanisms. To avoid such corruption of data packets by burst errors, one reduces the data packet length and interleaves the individual bits of the data packets. The first bit of the first data packet is followed by the first bit of the second, followed by the first bit of the third, and so on. A burst error would thus damage individual bits from different data packets, but not a complete data packet. Error correction can be used to restore the individual data packets.
  5. In television and radio technology, interleaving is used to interleave spectral frequencies. An example is the chrominance carrier in color television. The spectral frequencies of the chrominance signal interleave with those of the luminance signal without affecting each other.
