intercell interference coordination (LTE-A) (ICIC)
The network capacity of mobile communications networks is severely impaired by interference. In cellular networks, interference occurs when users in neighboring radio cells use the same resource at the same time and when they also operate at the edge of the radio cell, where they use more transmitting power.
To reduce the interference that arises, 3GPP has specified Intercell Interference Coordination (ICIC) for Long Term Evolution ( LTE). ICIC technology allocates different radio frequencies to mobile devices operating at the edge of neighboring radio cells.
