input/output (I/O)

Every computer concept has peripheral devices for the input and output (I/O) of data, commands and programs.

Since both procedures, the input and the output, differ substantially from each other, processors work with special control procedures with which they process the different procedures. These control procedures can work synchronously or be controlled by commands, interrupts, agreements, queries, etc.

Control procedures include polling, in which the processor queries the registers about the status of peripherals at specified intervals, and handshaking for consensual data transfer. Furthermore XON/XOFF are to be mentioned, the daisy chaining and the interrupt control.
