independent basic service set (WLAN) (IBSS)
In radio ad hoc networks according to IEEE 802.11, there are the simple Basic Service Sets( BSS), which connect two radio nodes with each other without an Access Point( AP) being connected in between.
In ad hoc networks, however, several radio nodes communicate with each other. For this group communication, there is the Independent Basic Service Set (IBSS).
Independent Basic Service Sets have no other active radio components. As with the Basic Service Set, the radio nodes, which are the Wireless Network Interface Controllers(WNIC) in the devices, communicate directly with each other. In notebooks, such WLAN adapters can be implemented as PC cards.
