incremental backup

An incremental backup is a backup copy in which only the data that has changed since the last backup is copied and backed up.

Since only changed data is copied in an incremental backup, such a backup can be performed much more quickly than a full backup. It does not matter whether the last backup is a full backup or a differential backup. In addition, an incremental backup requires much less storage space, which has a positive effect on cloud storage.

When restoring data, for example in the event of a system failure, the data from the various incremental backups that lie between the last full backup must be merged into a full backup. Only then does the resulting full backup have an up-to-date dataset.
