impedance matching

Impedance matching is a power matching. The optimum impedance matching is when the output impedance of the source matches the input impedance.

In this case, the maximum power is transferred from the source - an amplifier or other quadripole - to the downstream bipole or quadripole. In addition, when impedances are identical, reflection coe fficients are lowest.

Impedance matching plays an important role in high- frequency engineering when matchingantennas to the antenna amplifier or in acoustics when matching loudspeakers to the power amplifier. To match different impedances, there are matching and attenuating elements with which an impedance can be matched to the characteristicimpedance of a line or an active quadripole. These include the T-member, L-member and Pi-member.
