Identity Federation enables companies and organizations to accept trusted identities from other organizations, such as partners or suppliers.

The goal of Identity Federation is to integrate information from identities across company boundaries in order to simplify business processes. Identity Federation creates the conditions for defining the rights of all participating companies and for regulating access control to servers. The identity federation approach assumes that the security infrastructures of the individual companies are different and that a security concept with the integration of companies, persons and platforms is likely to be difficult to implement, if at all.
