Characteristics of High Definition Audio (HDA)

In addition to playback benefiting from higher bandwidth, HD audio also supports multi- channel microphone connections, dynamic bandwidths for streaming, and flexible configuration of audio devices. The sound experience is said to match that of Dolby Digital 5.1, which is supported by HD Audio. Bandwidths can be dynamically distributed and are 32 bits at 192 kHz for multichannel. This resolution and sampling rate are used for DVD-Audio; audio CD operates at 16-bit resolution and 44.1 kHz sampling rate.

The HDA process detects the connected audio devices by sensing the analog jacks.

High Definition Audio (HDA) replaces Audio Codec 97( AC97).
