header error control (ATM) (HEC)

The Header Error Control(HEC) is an error protection in headers. It is an 8-bitchecksum field used in the protocols that work with the Physical Layer Convergence Protocol( PLCP).

The error protection is used in the Asynchronous Transfer Mode( ATM), in the DQDB header, in the FHSS data frame, in the DSSS data frame and in WLANs. The check number of the entire cell header for cyclic block checking(CRC) is stored in it. The HEC field is also used for synchronization to the cell header.
