An earthing system is part of the lightning protection system and conducts struck lightning to earth via the lightning conductor.

It consists of a meshed network of earth electrodes around the building and the system. A foundation earth electrode is used in combination with other earth electrodes such as the depth earth electrode, ring earth electrode, radiation earth electrode and surface earth electrode. The meshing of the earth electrodes should have a mesh size of 5 m and, in order to keep possible overvoltages as low as possible, an earthing resistance of less than 10 ohms.

Between the various earth electrodes and the reference earth electrode, an electrical resistance of the earth occurs, the propagation resistance. This is calculated according to DIN VDE 0101.
