global information infrastructure (GII)

The global transport platform (GII) is a set of development guidelines issued by the European Commission. These guidelines include the fundamental rules to support the growth of the communications infrastructure worldwide. Developed in 1995, these guidelines consider interoperability, privacy and trust in the information society, intellectual property protection, universal access to information networks, as well as access to research and development and markets when building the infrastructure.

Since the complexity of such guidelines cannot be worked out by standardization bodies alone, national and international organizations are also collaborating to manage the extensive work.

Convergence of services as defined by the Global Information Infrastructure (GII)

In this work, the vision of a communication socket is to become reality. All relevant networks are to be included, from local networks to access networks, wide area and mobile networks, the Internet and satellite radio. In addition, the GII work should also take into account the convergence of the most diverse services. Voice, data and video are to be merged into interactive multimedia, computers and telephones into computer telephony integration( CTI), and the Internet and digital television( DVB) into Internet television( IPTV), to name a few.

The GIII work is being coordinated under the leadership of the International Telecommunication Union( ITU), vo the International Electrotechnical Commission ( IEC) and the International Standards Organization( ISO). The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has specified the basis for the Global Information Infrastructure (GII) in the standards Y.100 ff. Standard Y.100 dates from 1998 and provides an overview of GII and addresses its fundamentals. Y.110 specifies the framework architecture and Y.120 the methodology for developing scenarios.
