gigabit Ethernet PON (GEPON)

Gigabit EthernetPON (GEPON) is one of several concepts for the connection area. It is a variant of Gigabit PON( GPON), which is hardly used in Europe. Like GPON, GEPON was specified by the IEEE802.3ahworking group as " Ethernet in the first Mile".

GEPON establishes a point-to-point or a multipoint connection between the exchange and the end user. The data rate is 1.25 Gbit/s upstream and downstream. The range is 10 km. Each end subscriber is connected via its own optical fiber to a cablesplitter, a passive optical splitter in which the optical signals are multiplexed onto an optical fiber. GEPON operates according to the TDMA method with time slots.
