geocast

Geocast is a transmission method for messages such as unicast, multicast or broadcast. Geocast is sent in a defined geographical area and can only be received in this area by the subscribers logged in. It is thus equivalent to IP multicast in terms of a geographic area addressed by routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks.

The geographical area is determined by geo-routers using GPS data and the radius of the radio cell. Routing tables are defined by polygons that delineate the service area. The geographical area is addressed either via the World Geodetic System (WGS84) used by the GPS system, via spatial coordinates or via the IP protocol in the IPv6 version, which Geocast supports.

Geocast is used wherever a regionally defined area needs to be supplied with messages and information. For example, in car-to-car communication( C2C), for the transmission of regional messages, for location-based services or for the transmission of geographic data.
