gateway to gateway protocol (GGP)

The Gateway to Gateway Protocol (GGP) is located at the network layer of the OSI reference model and is built on the IP protocol.

The essential part of the GGP protocol maintains routing information exchanges involving GGP, which is due to a distributed shortest path calculation.

The routing updates are sent as UDP datagrams with well-defined format. Under normal circumstances, all GGP participants have a state in which the routing information is generally accepted. GGP is a true distance vector protocol (DVA). However, it is now obsolete and has been replaced by the Exterior Gateway Protocol.
