gap loss

Gap loss is the loss of light that occurs when two optical fib ers are coupled. Such light loss occurs when two optical fibers are coupled together.

This is the case with FOC connectors or when the light energy from a light emitting diode or a VCSEL laser is fed in. The German term for gap loss is Lücken- oder Spaltverlust. As far as the FOC connectors are concerned, the optical fib ers present in them may be axially offset from each other, they may differ in their eccentricity or they may not be connected to each other at the exact angle, thus causing the gap loss.

The light loss occurs due to the scattering and provides signal attenuation, which affects the signal quality and data throughput.
