fused silicon glass

Quartz glass is pure silicon dioxide( SiO2) in amorphous, i.e. non-crystalline form, which is used in semiconductors and in optical waveguides in optical transmission technology.

The melting point of fused quartz is about 1,700 °C, which is much higher than that of silicon at 1,414 °C. High-purity fused quartz has high strength and is used as the base material for the core glass and cladding glass ofoptical fibers. It has a refractive index of 1.46, which is increased by doping. Because the attenuation in the optical windows is low and because it has no material dispersion at wavelengths of 1,300 nm, it is used in optical fibers.
