full rate (GSM, encoding) (FR)

Full Rate(FR) is one of several possible methods of encoding and decoding voice in GSM and UMTS networks for transmission over the air interface.

A distinction is made between Enhanced Full Rate( EFR), Full Rate (FR), Half Rate( HR) and Adaptive Multirate( AMR).

By default, the full rate method is used, in which the audio information is converted into a data stream of 22.8 kbps. An improvement in voice quality at the same data rate is achieved with the Enhanced Full Rate method. With the half-rate method, a halving of the data rate is possible with comparable voice quality.
