frequency cell

In mobile communications, private mobileradio and trunked radio, the same carrier frequencies are allocated several times for reasons of frequency economy. The basic condition for this is that the same frequency is only used again outside the range of the first application, and a safety margin must still be maintained.

Honeycomb plan with hexagonal cells

Honeycomb plan with hexagonal cells

The coverage area of a transmitter, which depends on the transmission frequency, transmitter power and terrestrial topography, is approximately circular, but in frequency planning it is assumed to be hexagonal, similar to a honeycomb, and is referred to as a frequency honeycomb. With such a construct, one can get by with seven different transmitter frequencies without fear of mutual interference.
