floating point operations per second (FLOPS)
Floating Point Operations per Second (FLOPS) are floating point operations per second. It is the unit of measurement for the performance of processors, graphics processors and computers, referring to the number of floating point operations per second.
FLOPS are given the appropriate prefixes and are expressed in megaflops (MFLOPS) or MOPS, gigaflops (GFLOPS) and teraflops (TFLOPS), and even petaflops (PFLOPS).
While megaflops still refer to millions of floating point operations per second, gigaflops (`10^9`) already refer to billions and teraflops (`10^12`), which are realized in supercomputers, even to trillions of floating point operations in one second. With petaflops, also a size that is already realized in supercomputers, we are talking about a computing power of `10^15` floating point operations per second, i.e. quadrillions.
