flashpix (FPX)

FlashPix (FPX) is a file format developed by LivePicture for photorealistic renderings on the web. FlasPix representations are independent of their resolution and allow zooming without creating a raster effect.

From the realization point of view, FPX images are stored in different resolutions in several layers in the form of a pyramid on the web server and are displayed after being called up by the web page visitor. If the visitor only requests a section of the graphic, then the detailed display is called up in the corresponding resolution.

Each individual resolution can be stored without compression or in JPEG. Such representations are often found in online stores. When zooming, the FPX files with the corresponding resolutions are called one after the other. The images themselves are displayed as JPEGs. The same principle is used for panoramic images, where FlashPix creates the effect of the camera panning.
