A voltage flashover is an electrical discharge between two points, two lines or two live surfaces with different voltage potentials.

Only when a certain voltage is reached can the air ionize and voltage equalization can take place via an arc. Decisive for a voltage flashover is the distance between the points with the potential difference, the shape of the live points and the air pressure. Low air pressure increases the risk of a voltage flashover.
