file transfer profile (Bluetooth) (FTP)

The File Transfer Profile (FTP) of Bluetooth is based on the Generic Object Exchange Profile( GOEP), in which the general communication with Object Exchange( OBEX) is defined.

With the FTP profile it is possible to navigate in a file system of another Bluetooth device, to display the file structure and to change the directories. Furthermore, this Bluetooth profile can be used to perform a wireless file transfer from another device.

An example from automotive technology should illustrate the possibilities: VW has integrated an SD card into a wireless key for motor vehicles. This SD card can be used to copy files from computers, CD players or digital cameras and then retrieve them via the motor vehicle key in the car.
